Auckland Council places Alfriston at the northern end of the Papakura Local Board area, which reaches from Drury in the south. Alfriston Road runs through it. Wikipedia records a settlement dating from the 1840s, first called Papakura Valley, and Christ Church built in 1877. Alfriston School is on Alfriston Road, and Alfriston College is on Porchester Road. The Auckland Botanic Gardens, which are free to enter, list Alfriston Road in their driving directions. The documented trade-off is that there is no rail station of its own, and Auckland Transport's Alfriston Road bus-priority upgrade has no funding for design or construction.

The Botanic Gardens' own directions have north-bound drivers leave State Highway 1 at the Takanini exit (exit 453), take Great South Road and turn onto Alfriston Road. Auckland Transport's South Frequent Transit Network page describes bus priority upgrades on Alfriston Road, but says there is currently no funding and delivery is expected within 30 years.
