Is The Gardens a good place to live?
The Gardens takes its name from the Auckland Botanic Gardens on Hill Road, next to State Highway 1. Entry and parking are free, and the gardens open at 6.30am daily. Tōtara Park, a council reserve of 216 hectares with native forest tracks that take 20 to 60 minutes, sits alongside, with access from Wairere Road and Everglade Drive. Wikipedia records that the council bought the Totara Park land in 1966, that subdividing began in 1967, and that building started in 1984 with a later extension towards Mill Road. The Gardens School opened in 2002 and was rebuilt by 2018.

How do you get around from The Gardens?
Bus route 366 runs between the Manurewa bus interchange and the Botanic Gardens, according to the Gardens' visitor page. Manurewa Station, on the South City line, is the rail connection, and trains there run every 15 minutes off-peak. By car, the Gardens direct southbound drivers off State Highway 1 at the Manurewa and Hill Road exit (exit 451) and turn left onto Hill Road.

The Gardens street by street
The Gardens sits north of Manurewa proper, east of Wiri and south of Totara Heights, planned from the mid-1980s specifically around its position next to the Auckland Botanic Gardens. The Botanic Gardens themselves cover 64 hectares with more than 10,000 plants, and immediately next door is Totara Park, a much bigger 216-hectare reserve of regenerating native bush, farmland and recreational space managed by Auckland Council. Streets that back directly onto either reserve carry a real premium over the rest of the pocket. The Gardens School, a full primary serving years 1 to 8, anchors the family side of the market, and Alfriston College serves the suburb at secondary level. Bus route 366 runs between the Manurewa interchange and The Gardens, and it's roughly a 20-minute drive to the city centre via the Southern Motorway, though most household movement here is by car. Housing stock is consistently 1980s onward, family-sized standalone homes on generous sections, which is part of why the suburb reads calmer and more settled than some of the newer infill happening elsewhere in Manurewa.
